If you're a fan of Law and Order: SVU or Younger, then Mariska Hargitay and husband Peter Hermann probably look familiar to you.
You also might know Mariska from her brief appearance in Taylor Swift's "Bad Blood" music video, of course.
But what you might not know about the pair is that they have been married for 15 years, and share three kids together. And the story of how their family came to be the unique group it is today is one worth telling.
The couple already had a strong relationship, but they credit the decision to adopt to younger children, after having already had one son together, as the thing that further strengthened their unconditional love.
Their son, August Miklos was born in June 2006, and the couple then turned to adopted for their next two children. They adopted now-8-year-old daughter Amaya Josephine in 2011 and then, four months later, adopted son Andrew Nicolas.
Mariska says having lost her mom at a young age, and then growing up with a stepmom and half siblings helped her realize that family is made up in so many different ways.
"I know that families can be built in all sorts of different ways, that there isn’t just one way to create a family and that it isn’t just about biology."
She also talked about how their youngest, Andrew, was a bit of a "surprise" for them.
“I always describe it as this angel that fell out of the sky, because he was a little unexpected... It’s something that happened very quickly, when adoption can take a long time. We were so beautifully and surprisingly … not because we’re not in sync, but surprisingly in sync about something so huge. So momentous.”
Peter revealed in the conversation with PEOPLE that he is usually pretty private about his kids and their family:
"It’s funny, I always get so private about our kids, but I think that the easiest way or the easiest answer is we just wanted a bigger family and we feel incredibly blessed."
They seem like SUCH a sweet family! And I didn't realize the Mariska and Peter had been married all this time!
