Tired of feeling tired? If your afternoons are filled with yawns and yet another caffeine fix to get you through, you’re not alone. According to new research from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, most adults feel sleepy during the day and it’s affecting their everyday life.
The poll of 2-thousand adults across the country finds that 72% admit that sleepiness gets in the way of their day to day activities.
- Being tired affects everything from their mood (60%), to their stress and anxiety levels (53%) and productivity at work (42%).
- Women are more likely than men (36% versus 25%) to say sleepiness impacts the way they manage their household.
- It can even affect relationships, especially for younger Americans, as 30% of those between 25 and 34 and 31% of those ages 35 to 44 say it does.
- More than half (56%) try to boost their energy with caffeine and 46% admit they take a nap to push through the day.⠀
"Daytime sleepiness is a common problem that can be detrimental for mood, performance, and quality of life," explains Dr. Eric Olson, past president of the AASM and professor of medicine at Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine. "Healthy sleep enables us to feel great and perform our best during the day." He also points out that constantly relying on caffeine to get you through the day is a sign you need more sleep.
