A family in Clarke County, Alabama, discovered a rare 32-million-year-old fossilized leatherback sea turtle shell while fishing on the Alabama River. The find, which weighs about a ton, was later excavated with the help of paleontologist Dr. Andrew Gentry and his team, who determined the fossil belongs to a previously unknown species and genus. Members of the Poarch Creek Tribe named the species in their native Muskogee language as Ueloca colemanorum, meaning water turtle. The fossil is now on display at the McWane Science Center in Birmingham.
