The TSA has banned new items from checked bags: cordless hair styling tools that contain gas cartridges or butane, including cordless curling irons, flat irons, and their spare gas refills. Like the lithium battery powered items they added to the banned checked-bag items list earlier this year, these potentially hazardous hair tools are actually allowed in your carry-on bag as long as they have safety covers, while corded hair tools are good-to-go in carry-ons or checked bags. If TSA finds these banned items in your checked bags, they'll confiscate your entire suitcase, so it's definitely worth double-checking before you head to the airport! On the flip side, TSA's list of approved items continues to be surprisingly quirky; you can still fly with live lobsters, Harry Potter wands, cowboy spurs, antlers, and even waffle irons, proving that airport security rules can be pretty unpredictable. If you’re confused too, you can check out what’s banned and what’s allowed on TSA's website.
