Study: Families Are Buying More Groceries From Dollar Stores

Families across the country are increasingly turning to dollar stores to buy food. A new study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics found that calories obtained from dollar store items have nearly doubled from 3.4-percent to 6.5-percent of a household's purchases. Dollar stores are now the fastest growing food retailers in the U.S., which comes as people choose the budget-friendly stores for price advantage. Scientists also noted the results suggest “the overall diet quality of households was similar, whether or not they shopped at dollar stores.”
