The Most Stolen Cars In The U.S.

You never think it can happen to you, but more than 850-thousand cars were stolen in the U.S. in 2024 alone, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau. That’s one every 37 seconds! But some car models are targeted more often and are easier to steal. So, which ones are more at risk for theft? New research reveals the most commonly stolen cars in America.

  • The team at FinanceBuzz analyzed car theft data from all 50 states to find the most frequently stolen models in each state.
  • Overall, the Hyundai Elantra was the most stolen vehicle in the U.S. last year.
  • It was the top stolen car in 21 states, with more than 31-thousand stolen just in 2024.
  • Another Hyundai, the Sonata, is the second-most stolen car model in the U.S.
  • There were more than 58-thousand thefts of Elantras and Sonatas last year alone, making the two most popular Hyundai models the two most stolen cars in the country.
  • Part of that may be because of TikTok videos that went viral in 2023 showing people starting engines of those cars with just a screwdriver and USB cable. And an increase in thefts followed.
  • The Chevy Silverado is next (most stolen in nine states), followed by the Ford F150 (six states).
