You might not realize that you don’t really look like the photo on your dating app profile, but chances are, your date noticed. More than half of Gen Z and millennial singles have gone on a date with someone who looked really different from their profile pictures, according to a new survey from the dating app Hily.
They asked 37-hundred of their users about their profile maintenance habits and found there’s one major reason to keep those photos up to date. Nearly two-thirds (62%) of millennials and 54% of Gen Z admit they’ve ended a date early or said no to a second one after realizing their match looked nothing like their photos.
The survey also reveals:
- A lot of singles are seeing something but not saying something, as only 12% of women and 10% of men have been told they don’t look like their profile pics.
- About 45% of Gen Z users and 33% of millennials admit that their profile photos are “close to their actual looks,” but don’t look exactly like the person meeting up for drinks.
- Part of the reason for that is that one in five women and one in four men haven’t updated their dating profile photos in at least six months.
- So, what’s holding them back? A third (32%) of women admit they’re afraid of being judged for their looks, while about the same number of men believe updating their profile won’t matter.
- More than half of women and 44% of guys say that getting new good photos is what motivates them to finally edit their profile, and a series of disappointing matches does the same.
- But some people say they’ll probably stick with their first pics forever, as 19% of women and 14% of men admit nothing could convince them to update their profiles.
- And it’s not just pictures that are outdated, about 20% of women and 17% of guys confess they’ve never once updated the “looking for” section of their profile even if that had changed since they first swiped.
